Teaching Philosophy
Art is so much more than just creating a piece to be hung up on a wall or put on a pedestal; art is about exploration, play, and self-expression. As an artist with a passion for learning and growth, I wish to create and facilitate that same sort of passion in my students. One of the largest issues in the art education world is that the structure is rigid, repetitive, and does not foster a sense of individuality by means of working in an artistic space. Integrating a contemporary art curriculum into education is extremely important for the success of students to better their way of thinking and their sense of what is possible, and this applies to every subject taught in schools.
One of my main goals as an art educator is to create a classroom environment that is comfortable, welcoming, and safe so that we as a community are able to have the difficult conversations with art as a vehicle to propel those conversations forward. Students should be able to express the ideas that they have as a way of internal problem solving, but this can only be done in a strongly built environment. Fostering an environment that allows students to truly feel that the space is for them is my main goal. School is for the students, and the art room should be no different.
Art education is about much more than creating visual works that demonstrate an understanding of the written framework. Art education is about teaching students to think differently in an ever-changing world and advocating for their beliefs, thoughts, and ideals.
